WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO USE GEOFABRIC FOR DRIVEWAYS AND ROADS
It is now accepted that most water entering the pavement layers comes through the surfacing. This can lead to rapid deterioration of the roads which should be avoided.
Paving fabrics are often employed to extend the life of roads which are undergoing maintenance or constructed over clay bases. Paving fabrics have the potential, when designed and installed properly, to retard reflective cracking and provide a moisture barrier that prevents water from penetrating the road structure both before and after cracking. Paving fabrics effectively control many types of cracking
Extensive studies have been done to examine surface infiltration of rainwater. An American Federal Highways Authority study of numerous pavement sections found that 33 to 67 percent of the precipitation water falling on pavement could infiltrate through the pavement to the road base. Deteriorating Asphalt Pavements Cracking is the most widespread type of destruction of asphalt concrete pavements.
Maintenance measures to repair cracking include patching, sealing, milling, re-paving, and overlays. Although overlays are frequently utilized as a method of repair, reflective cracking, or the propagation of the original cracks into the new overlay, has been a major stumbling block. The occurrence of reflective cracking and the subsequent penetration of water into the pavement sub-layers are the primary cause of rapid deterioration of pavement overlay systems. The most important factor in extending the life of pavement, therefore, is the reduction of water infiltration.
